Reach Cambridge July 2016: Day 2
Today was the second full day at Reach and it was just as busy at the first! After a good breakfast at our colleges (Christs, Downing and Trinity Hall) everyone went to their second day of classes beginning at 9am. Students are taking hugely varied classes, from Journalism and Media to Computer Science and Physics. Once those ended at 1pm it was off to Downing, where all of the students and staff gathered on the Paddock and took a huge group photo together! After that, the students were free to have lunch in Cambridge, trying out restaurants (or going to Krispy Kreme …)
After lunch it was time for the afternoon activities – on offer today were sport, drama and Community Outreach. Sport was outside in Downing paddock and most of the students were happily stuck in playing football and volleyball (until the British rain made an appearance!) Inside was a drama workshop, where we played warm-up games, improv and freeze scenes. The students had an amazing time coming up with some crazy scenarios, including some Scottish aliens coming down to Earth and trying to fit in! It was great to see everyone so enthusiastic about the activities, as well as the students getting the chance to meet people outside of their course and corridors (whether through tackling them outside or playing the Romeo to their Juliet)!
Once activities had ended and everyone got dinner there was the evening lecture – these happen most nights and are on a huge variety of subjects. Today a former Cambridge student talked about Positive Psychology, offering the students tips, tricks and hacks in order to help them change their mindsets, lives and studying techniques! It’s great to have the chance to hear from people with so many different experiences, and safe to say it was extremely interesting – there was no end of questions for the lecturer, with students lining up at the end to talk to him!
Post lecture, students were free to go back to explore the town or rest in their rooms. Otherwise there was the opportunity to go to a University Applications Seminar held by Reach supervisors who are current university students in the UK. They were able to hear and ask questions about university life and the applications procedure in the UK, which is so useful when applying to the UK is something that so many want to do. There was also the opportunity to do some arts and crafts with other supervisors, with a whole range of materials available for students to let out their creative side after a long day. Overall the second day at Reach was just as busy and fun as the first!
