It’s London time! A trip to the UK would not be complete without visiting the bustling capital, with students eagerly anticipating the trip down south, which for many was the first time in the ‘Big Smoke’! London offers an abundance of entertainment and culture, so we let the students decide how they want to spend their day. Following on from Friday’s trip to the home of Shakespeare, those students in the mood for Shakespeare got to see the live performance of Much Ado about Nothing, in the Globe theatre itself! The play is set in Messina and revolves around the romantic misunderstandings and dynamics of two couples, Beatrice and Benedick, and Claudio and Hero. Group A also took a trip to the Tate Modern, witnessing some of the world’s most exciting modern and contemporary art, featuring the work of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.
Group B had a different but just as exciting day, taking in the range of museums in South Kensington, before doing some shopping in the massive department store of Harrods. The Natural History Museum, an architectural marvel, was incredibly popular with the students. Inside, a colossal Diplodocus skeleton greeted the students, setting the stage for an educational journey through Earth’s history. The museum’s extensive collection of fossils, minerals, and interactive geological displays captivated everyone, staff and students alike.
Some students opted for the Science Museum, featuring interactive exhibits on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Highlights included space exploration artifacts and thrilling experiments in the “Wonderlab.” Others explored the Victoria & Albert Museum, admiring intricate historical artifacts, exquisite sculptures, and diverse paintings, with dedicated sections on fashion, textiles, and contemporary design.
Group B then took a short walk to Harrods, one of the largest department stores in the world, with over 300 departments! Its most famous sections include the jewellery section, designer brand stores, and the giant food hall, where students could try out the array of food and drink on offer!
After a busy day for both groups, the students reconvened back in Cambridge for some evening activities back in college. Students had the choice between an international sports quiz, or a youth theatre session, with games and activities revolving around acting, singing and dancing! Or, for those yet to take part in a classic game of Werewolf, the hunt for the hidden werewolves carried on, with new students trying their hand at hiding from the villagers!
