Day 15: One Big Community

After a hectic weekend of excursions, we started our Monday at Reach a bit of a lie in – students really appreciated the later breakfast and more leisurely start to class! The sun was shining in Cambridge after lunch time, as we headed out to the Paddock for some sports in the sunshine.  As well as a great game of football, students enjoyed an impromptu session of Frisbee and basketball, with a fantastic number of students motivating themselves to get involved! We were also lucky enough to have a truly inspirational evening talk today, given by our very own supervisor, Precious, and the incredible fifteen-year-old Jeremiah, who spoke to us about their organization, One Big Community, which is concerned with youth crime and its prevention. The talk not only allowed us an insight into the problems which the organization has identified and its unique message which gives a voice to young people, but also demonstrated the incredible power which people the same age as our students have to enact positive change around them. Hopefully each of the students will take this message away with them! zumbaAfter the lecture, we set up a Zumba class; a fun and exciting way to practice intense exercise! Many of the students participated enthusiastically – so much so that they were reluctant to stop even by 10pm! Upstairs, we also held a Personal Statement clinic for those thinking of applying to UK universities, in which we discussed course choices, what to include in a personal statement, and most importantly how to set yourself apart from other candidates to achieve the greatest possible effect. Students were keen and mature, demonstrating their diligence and interest in their futures. Another fantastic day for both students and staff! Written by Alice, Supervisor
