Summer 2021: Program 1 - Day 4

Program 1 is in full swing now with students settling into a routine and getting to know the college, city and one another! Breakfast began at 8am with croissants, fruit, yoghurt and cooked breakfasts on offer for students, before they made their way to classes at 9am. After classes, the students were ferried by their Reach supervisors into town to grab some lunch, do some shopping and take in the beautiful sights! Cambridge is currently hosting a spectacular “Cows about Cambridge” public art event meaning a variety of colourful cow sculptures designed by local artists can be found across the city.

After lunch, students gathered in the iconic cobbled market square to head back to Fitzwilliam College for afternoon activities. On offer today were sports on the college’s nearby sports facilities and Glamyard (glamorous lanyard) making under the beautiful oaks on tree court. There was plenty of excellent artistic talent on display and some super-glitzy lanyards produced.

The evening’s lecture focussed on Presentation Skills and Public Speaking, covering a huge range of hints and tips to communicate effectively and with more confidence. After the lecture, football fever set in once more, with a screening of England vs Denmark in the second semi-final of the European Championship. Tensions were running high amongst both staff and students for what turned into a nail biting game finishing 1 – 1 after 90 minutes. Students then signed in at 10pm with supervisors to settle down for another busy day ahead (or watch the added time/ penalties from the comfort of their rooms!).
