Spring Program: Day 10

Today was the ‘subject-specific’ day in Reach Hall, where students were divided up according to the subjects they elected to study during their time with us. For some of the students, this was their second full day immersing themselves in their subjects. For those who joined us on Saturday, this was their first experience of the more intense academia of the Reach Spring program.  We always ensure our classes provide a favourable ratio of staff to students, but the intimate size of the Spring course allows students to benefit from exceptional attention from their teachers. This style of teaching is intended to mimic the ‘supervisions’ they would experience at universities such as Cambridge and Oxford, which allows for a bespoke, challenging and stimulating learning experience.

After both the morning and afternoon devoted to their academic passions, the students had chance to let off some steam by playing a game of football on Jesus Green. The evening was more relaxed, consisting of an Indian takeaway (with the seal of approval from Hyren, one of our Indian students – phew!) and a movie night. Which movie, you ask? Why, ‘The Theory of Everything’ of course – the 2014 biopic of the life of Cambridge alumnus and all-round science legend Stephen Hawking. The majority of the film was shot in Cambridge. It’s always exciting for students to see the city they are growing increasingly fond of and familiar with on the silver screen! As we mentioned in one of our previous blogs, some of the students saw Professor Hawking in the flesh last week, so that made the viewing choice extra-enjoyable. Tomorrow promises the second Community Outreach session, where students will hear about the work of The Sabre Trust, a charity Reach Cambridge is proud to support year on year. You can find out more about the work they do here. We are also very much looking forward to our students attending Formal Hall at Downing College tomorrow night – a treat for those who went last week and the new arrivals too!
