Reach Cambridge August 2016: Day 6

It has been an extremely fun and eventful day for the Reach Cambridge students. In the morning, the English Literature class had a very engaging and thought-provoking discussion analyzing the portrayal of women in the media; their knowledge of feminist literature was very impressive and this contributed to a lively class discussion. During the afternoon, many students attended World Fair Prep, including one student who used the time to rehearse a Latvian folk song to represent her country and culture. At the same time, choir and sport took place as well – sport was excellent, with many students coming to play tennis, rugby and football. The Biotechnology class had a field trip to the University of Cambridge Pharmacology department. The Biotech students partook in an enzyme-based lab simulation, where they placed different levels of antagonistic and agonists in a solution. The students concluded that antagonistic drugs reduce the level of agonist drugs: they came to this conclusion by designing a laboratory experiment with various controls and trials. In the evening the students attended a lecture regarding Political Populism. The speaker was fantastic and the students asked various thought-provoking questions that generated an enthralling discussion. Following this was the Charity Auction for Sabre – the students bid on various items and experiences offered by the students themselves as well as supervisors. The room was filled with a positive, generous atmosphere and we raised an amazing amount for the charity, Tomorrow shall be another busy and exciting day. We are looking forward to it already!
